Marcin Pączkowski is a composer, conductor, digital artist, and performer working with both traditional and electronic media. Born and raised in Poland, he earned Master’s degrees in both Music Composition and Symphony and Opera Conducting from the Academy of Music in Kraków. He subsequently earned a Ph.D. in Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXARTS) from the University of Washington.
Dr. Pączkowski serves as the Music Director for the Polish Choir Vivat Musica in Seattle and the Evergreen Community Orchestra in Everett. In 2025, he formed the Marcin Pączkowski Orchestra, a string ensemble that presented works from the Polish repertoire at the Polish Festival and the Polish Home. He is currently on the faculty at Cornish College of the Arts at Seattle University, and has previously held teaching roles with the University of Washington, DigiPen Institute of Technology, and the Seattle Symphony.
As a composer, he focuses on developing innovative approaches to creating and performing computer music. He engineers custom accelerometer-based wearable sensors, which he integrates into interactive gestural performances. Works featuring this technology have been presented internationally at events including the International Computer Music Conference (Daegu, South Korea), the SEAMUS conference (Lafayette, Indiana), the Toronto International Electroacoustic Symposium (Canada), the Audio Art Festival (Kraków, Poland), the Northwest Percussion Festival (Ashland, Oregon), and the Music of Today series (Seattle, Washington).
In his role with the Evergreen Community Orchestra, he programs and conducts diverse repertoire for local audiences. A dedicated advocate for contemporary music, he has led the premieres of numerous works in the United States and Poland. His conducting engagements with the Inverted Space ensemble include performances of Giacinto Scelsi’s Anahit (featuring violinist Luke Fitzpatrick), Brian Ferneyhough’s Flurries, and Joël-François Durand’s Hermetic Definition.
His work has been supported by grants and commissions from the Seattle Symphony, the City of Seattle, the Seattle Polish Foundation, the eScience Institute, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, and the Polish Institute of Music and Dance. Additionally, Dr. Pączkowski is an active instrumentalist and collaborator within the Seattle-area improvised music community.
