In May 1943, Szmul (Shmuel) Zygielbojm, a member of the Polish government-in-exile, dies under suspicious circumstances in German-occupied Warsaw. This leads a young British journalist to follow the coroner’s investigation, revealing the significance of Zygielbojm’s mission in Great Britain: to convince the apathetic Allies to intervene in the Holocaust being perpetrated by Nazi Germany.
A trade-union activist and Socialist politician, Zygielbojm was a man of action. When the Nazis ordered the establishment of a Jewish ghetto, he pushed his Bund colleagues to refuse and inspired so much public resistance that the ghetto wasn’t established for another year, when he went into exile in the Netherlands and England.
A true historical tragedy, THE DEATH OF ZYGIELBOJM is a brutal condemnation of indifference and inaction and a timely reminder that we must always take evil seriously—and act against it.
